Olivine Mineral Specimen

Olivine is a primary component of the Earth's upper mantle, it is a common mineral in Earth's subsurface, but weathers quickly on the surface. Olivine is usually green in color but can also be yellow-green, greenish yellow, or brown. It is transparent to translucent with a glassy luster and a hardness between 6.5 and 7.0. It is however very brittle and breaks off easily. Thus it is recommended to handle it very carefully and gently. The transparent green variety is known as peridot.
